Preventative Care & Medical Services
- Annual Exams at Pet Med Clinic will help you and the doctor detect abnormalities like changes in weight, drinking, and attitude, etc. Your pet's health is dependent on you and PMC. The annual exam includes fecals for your pet which is the best preventative measure you can take. Fecals are recommended more often for puppies and kittens.
- Vaccinating your pet is one of the best preventative measures you can take. Talk to your veterinarian if you have questions or concerns. See Medical Services
- Heartworm Preventatives, give monthly to cats and dogs, not only prevents heartworm disease but also controls roundworm and hookworm (stomach parasites) which are highly contagious to humans and can cause serious illness. For this reason, this treatment is recommended year round for all dogs and outside cats. See Medical Topics
- Flea control can be accomplished by several treatments, both internally and externally, for your pet. See Medical Topics
- Cleaning your pet's teeth periodically with pet toothpaste is recommended specifically for your pet by our staff.
- A good grooming routine of brushing and bathing (for dogs) reduces itching and skin infections. A routine clip for dogs may help with parasite control.
- A routine ear cleaning at home (instruction from our staff on the proper method and ear products best suited to your pets) is recommended. This should be performed every 2-4 weeks and is recommended more often if your pet has an infection.
- Eyes: We will check your pet's eyes at every yearly check-up. For pets 7 years and older, we include the glaucoma screening test.
- Diet: Last but not least, a diet of a good quality pet food is important to maintain a happy and healthy pet. Our staff will be happy to recommend a pet food best suited to your pet and its lifestyle. Proper weight is vital for a "healthy" pet. If your pet is too heavy, it could suffer from arthritis, diabetes and heart ailments. If it is too light, it may indicate early signs of disease.
Senior Pet Care
Our goal is to keep your pet healthy into their late years (15-20 yrs) by following a program of multiple physicals with blood work each year. Early detection is the key to successful treatment. If you wait until your pet tells you something is wrong, chances are the illness is too advanced and too late to treat it effectively.
The doctors at Pet Med Clinic recommend twice yearly physicals with blood screens for all pets over 6 years of age.
In additional to our excellent preventative care services, we provide the following veterinary medical services for your pet.
Medical Services
Dental: Proper dental care for puppies and kittens requires periodic brushing with pet toothpaste. If neglected, periodontal disease in older pets may occur, causing serious infection and bad breath. A dental exam is recommended for determining preventive care such as scaling, polishing and antibiotics. Let our staff recommend the Pet Dental Product best suited for your pet's personality and needs.
Laser: The laser is used for numerous surgical procedures such as declawing. The laser makes declawing LESS painful because there is less swelling and bleeding. Declawing will require a one-night stay with no bandages or sutures. The laser can also be used to remove small skin warts with local anesthetic.
Skin Problems & Stomach Disorders: Our doctors have a special interest in diagnostic and treatment of skin problems and stomach disorders.
Spay/Neuter: This procedure is recommended for all pets. Not only does it have a positive effect on your pet's behavior, it lowers the population of unwanted animals in this community and decreases the likelihood of many cancers and infections that could end your pet's life. Spaying and neutering is best done at the age of 6 months.
Surgical Procedures: We offer a full range of surgical procedures including orthopedics, spay and neutering, declawing (see Laser), skin biopsies diagnosis, skin tumor surgeries, eyelid plastic surgery and emergency surgeries.
Ultrasound: This new medical technology is used to detect abnormal tissues and the extent of disease in organs.
Tonopen: This instrument is used to detect glaucoma. It is an inexpensive way for PMC to evaluate your pet's eyes and provide early prevention to eye disease.
VETSPECS VM/4: This tool helps measure your pet's heart rate and rhythm, body temperature, and oxygen level during surgical procedures. This instrument is utilized in our Premium Surgery Package which is part of our pain management program.
X-rays: Including dental x-rays. The clinic uses state-of-the-art equipment.
Microchipping: The procedure involves the insertion of a microchip (a small computer chip) under the skin at the shoulders of your pet. Each chip has a unique number. Animal shelters, dog wardens and veterinarians can read this number with a special scanning device. The number is then called into the company and they identify the owners. This procedure is safe and is a secure way to protect your pet.
Endoscopy: This medical technology is used to take biopsies from the nose, ear, stomach, intestine and bladder, remove foreign bodies, examine ears, and help determine the fertility of female dogs.
Vaccinations for Dogs:
- DHPP, a 4 in 1 vaccine for puppies/dogs which protects against canine distemper, hepatitis, para influenza and parvovirus.
- Rabies vaccinations are required by law for all dogs 6 months of age and older.
- Bordetella is a vaccine that helps prevent "kennel cough" which is a respiratory infection.
- Lyme vaccine-Lyme's disease is transmitted to dogs and humans through tick bites. It is recommended for dogs that spend time in parks or campgrounds where they can be exposed to ticks.
- Corona vaccine is a viral disease contracted in areas where large numbers of dogs spend time i.e. parks and playgrounds. Remember not all people take care of their pets like you do. These pets are taken to the park/playground to feel better but are spreading disease at the same time.
- Note: DHPP, Rabies and Bordetella vaccines are required for all hospitalized, boarded and groomed dogs
Vaccinations for Cats:
- FVRCP is a 3-in-1 vaccine for kittens/cats that protects against Feline Panleukopenia (cat distemper) and Feline Respiratory Disease Complex.
- Rabies vaccinations are required by law and should be given to kittens at 6 months of age or older. This vaccine protects for 1 year.
- FELV (Feline Leukemia) is a deadly disease contracted through direct contact with another cat or from a mother to a kitten. We suggest all cats be tested for the virus prior to starting this vaccine. The vaccine has no effect on a cat that is positive on the test.
- FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) is a deadly disease contracted through direct contact with another cat or from a mother to a kitten. There is no reliable test for this disease at this time.
Note: FVRCP and Rabies vaccines are required for all hospitalized, boarded and groomed cats. FELV and FIP vaccines are mandatory for all cats that go outside or come in contact with outside cats (even through a window or door screen).
Drop Off Service: For your convenience, simply drop off your pet at 8:00 AM or later for treatment and pick up before closing that day.
House Calls: PMC provides in-home veterinary service for our clients. This is particularly helpful for the elderly, handicapped and households with multiple pets. The service is limited due to the doctor's constraints. Pick-up and delivery of your pet is available for an additional cost. CALL for details.
